Michael Bahar, a Washington DC partner at the law firm of Eversheds Sutherland, is the co-lead of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy practice globally.

Formerly Deputy Legal Advisor to the National Security Counsel at the White House, Staff Director and General Counsel for the House Intelligence Committee, and Active Duty Navy JAG, Michael offers clients pragmatic and comprehensive guidance on cybersecurity, privacy and advanced technologies, assisting major companies worldwide. Michael excels in guiding businesses through the complexities of the evolving threat, regulatory, and litigation landscapes. His strategic legal advice focuses on risk mitigation and capitalizing on opportunities, particularly for firms venturing into new markets, adopting innovative technologies, and managing data across borders.

His leadership spans a team of 160+ cybersecurity and data privacy lawyers across 35 countries, providing proactive, all-encompassing advice. Michael is renowned for his ability to offer clear, composed support during crises, facilitating a global response to challenges 24/7.

Michael is also a Captain and Commanding Officer in the US Navy JAG Corps Reserves. His notable achievements in the Reserves include negotiating the release of hostages and as the lead lawyer for the peace talks with the Taliban.

As a recognized thought leader, Michael frequently shares his insights on cybersecurity and data privacy at conferences and in print, contributing to pivotal discussions and publications in the field.

Having deployed multiple times over the course of decades in the Navy, Michael knows first hand the vital importance of the Shields & Stripes mission. Giving back to those who have given so much– through military service, law enforcement service or as a first responder– is what continues to draw him to service on the Board of Advisors.
